Due to its natural beauty and unique characteristics, including significant natural landmarks, well-preserved forests of natural composition, and cultural-historical values, the Republic of Serbia Assembly designated a portion of the Kopaonik mountain area as the Kopaonik National Park through the National Parks Law in 1981. At that time, the national park covered an area of 11,980.94 hectares. The first spatial plan, established in 1988, defined a protected zone of 19,986 hectares along with its protection regimes. In 1989, a decision was made to establish the “National Park Kopaonik” enterprise, with the primary objective of protecting and enhancing nature and the environment. Following the adoption of the Public Enterprises Law in 1993, the National Park was registered as a Public Enterprise.
