Let’s Save the Soil for Future Generations Burning generates high temperatures, turning the topsoil into ash and dust, which is carried away by winds and washed away by rains, resulting in the loss of the most vital layer for future crop yields. Burning kills all soil organisms (earthworms, microorganisms) that play an irreplaceable role in plant nutrition by converting nutrients from fertilizers into forms accessible to plants and decomposing organic matter in the soil. This practice serves no beneficial purpose and only harms agricultural producers. PLOWING improves the soil’s water regime, retaining up to 2.5% more moisture during autumn and winter tillage compared to land where stubble has not been turned under. Plowing also combats weeds by provoking the germination of weed seeds that can be easily destroyed by further cultivation. This process returns to the soil a portion of what has been removed through harvest, including essential nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium) and organic matter, which represents a form of mild fertilization. Basic soil preparation becomes easier as the ground hardens less, significantly reducing fuel consumption. Burning stubble, trash, and plant residues is prohibited by the Fire Protection Law (Article 50). Anyone who causes a fire is required to reimburse the firefighting and rescue unit for the intervention costs, in accordance with specific regulations. Individuals can face fines of 10,000 dinars for violations, while legal entities can be fined between 300,000 and 1,000,000 dinars. If it is determined that burning of harvest residues has occurred on a farm, that farm loses its right to agricultural incentives for a period of two years.
